Reading the unemployment rate
The unemployment rate is a percent of the labor force.
Concept
A rate turns a count into a share. For UNRATE, the denominator is the labor force, not the total population.
Worked Example: Read the latest unemployment rate
- UNRATE is reported in percent. The latest reading is 4.30% on 2026-05-01.
- The labor force means people working or actively looking for work.
- Read 4.30% as about 4.3 unemployed people out of 100 people in that labor force.
- The page source and as-of date tell you when that observation was last refreshed.
